Gotham City first and foremost belongs to the psychocriminals;
Joker, Penquin, Riddler... You get my drift? I thought so.
Even us
But what happens if we can't even escape to Outer Space?[/i]
On the 31st of Halloween, 2013, Wayne Industries announced its multi-million dollar plan to bring space travel to Gotham City as part of the plan to update and publicize Gotham. "Revolutionize the city!" they said, "Revolutionize the world!" And frankly it did seem like a brilliant idea; Billionaire Bruce Wayne had the money and the science to make it happen, and diplomat that he was he easily convinced the city that they had the spirit, and shuttle production began at once. After all, with Wayne Industries you’re in good hands, right?
On the same night, two things happened: Arkham Asylum experienced one of its craziest breakouts to date, and the storm of the century hit the world... And completed bypassed Gotham City. The foundations of The White House sank two metres into the ground, the face of Big Ben shattered, The Leaning Tower of Pisa straightened, and thousands of lives were lost. For most of the night people in Gotham City remained oblivious to the escapes and the hurricane alike.
And while the world battled floods, wind and lightning, with half of Gotham hanging onto Bruce Wayne’s every word (and, for some unknown reason, The Batman apparently otherwise incapacitated…) the most notorious criminals in Gotham City managed to break out. The Joker, The Scarecrow, The Penguin, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, The Riddler, Poison Ivy… The list goes on and on. And what’s the most worrying fact? Not one inmate, once out of Arkham, fought, threatened or combated another.
The media said that the escapees took Gotham by storm, that they were in cahoots. After all, the crime rate since that night was at an all-time low across the globe. For twenty-four hours Gotham was literally Arkham’s playground, and where was Gotham PD? Chasing The Batman around Arkham intent on capturing him during these rare daylight sightings, as through his efforts not a single inmate was unaccounted for in his or her padded cell by the break of the second day.
But something was up. Not only had no criminal fought with another criminal whilst waging havoc onto the city, but not one – not even The Joker – had complained when The Batman hauled their sorry asses back to the clink. In fact, some even seemed glad, as though that was exactly what they wanted. And in no way were any of us naïve enough to believe that was the end of that.
Twenty fours is long enough for a psychopathic irrational criminal with a vengeance against a whole city, and as any psychologist will tell you if a two year old can hold a grudge at the kid in the sandpit who stole their spade then so can the majority of Arkham Asylum’s inhabitants. Too late Gotham found out what was happening. In the following months – while the USA rebuilt itself around Gotham City, psychos broke out of Arkham as usual, one at a time, but after Halloween some managed to jump town before Batman caught up with them. The Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin made it into the water treatment plant at New Orleans and The Penguin even made it to the Tower of London and the crown jewels to name but a few. At least this time they made it back to Arkham characteristically kicking and screaming. But every move they had taken left a trail of chaos, destruction and heavy explosives the likes of which the world had never seen. All the signs pointed towards a mass collaboration with its headquarters in Gotham, and no matter how much money Gotham put into cover up stories knowledge occasionally leaked out to the world of who all their visiting crazies were.
And yet despite all the threats left, right and centre Wayne’s Space Inhabitation project carried on regardless. One year later, the vehicle, built to seat one hundred randomly chosen citizens of Gotham City, is ready for take-off. With the Arkham Asylum inmates finally abortively back under control , the hope is that when the shuttle launches on Christmas Day Gotham will redeem itself. But the whispers still remain.
Is planet Earth the limit for the psychopaths of Gotham City?
And what unearthly force protected Gotham and drove Arkham Asylum mad… Er?[/color]
